SECTION 1: POLICY STATEMENT
1.1. University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) is committed to fostering a health-conscious and environmentally responsible campus.
1.2. UM6P upholds its commitment to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable university environment by ensuring that smoking is managed in a way that balances individual choices with the preservation of campus quality and shared spaces.
SECTION 2: PURPOSE
2.1. The policy aims to establish clear regulations on smoking at UM6P to foster a smoke-free campus environment that prioritizes health, well-being, and environmental responsibility while minimizing exposure to secondhand smoke, maintaining campus cleanliness, and supporting sustainability efforts
SECTION 3: SCOPE AND APPLICABILITY
3.1. The policy applies to all members of the UM6P community, including students, faculty, staff, contractors, visitors, and any external individuals or entities present on the UM6P campus.
3.2. This policy applies to UM6P’s Benguerir campus and Rabat campus, as well as any associated facilities.
SECTION 4: DEFINITIONS
4.1. Smoking: refers to the act of inhaling, exhaling, burning, heating, carrying, or possessing any lighted or heated substance intended for inhalation, whether natural or synthetic. This includes but is not limited to tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, water pipes, hookahs, or any similar device. Smoking also encompasses the use of electronic smoking devices such as e-cigarettes or vaporizers that produce an aerosol or vapor, as well as any oral smoking device intended to circumvent smoking prohibitions.
4.2. Staff and faculty: All employees (full and part-time) of the university including but not limited to lecturers, heads of departments, any other staff involved directly or indirectly in research or related activities including technical, clerical, clinical and administrative staff.
4.3. Students: those individuals enrolled or participating in an academic program within UM6P.
SECTION 5: PROVISIONS AND GUIDELINES
5.1. UM6P adopts this smoking policy to balance personal freedom with the rights of non-smokers to a smoke-free environment, ensuring a respectful, inclusive, and health-conscious campus for all. It is established in compliance with Law No. 15-91 on smoking prevention.
5.2. The responsibility of maintaining a smoke-free and properly managed campus is collectively upheld by all individuals present on campus.
5.3. Smoking is strictly prohibited across the entire UM6P campus, except within designated smoking areas, which are equipped with appropriate facilities, and detailed in the annexed cartography of authorized smoking zones.
5.4. The sale, advertising, and promotion of smoking products are not permitted on the UM6P campus.
5.5. Cigarette butts and smoking-related waste must be disposed of in designated receptacles, as littering smoking products is prohibited to maintain campus cleanliness.
5.6. UM6P is committed to promoting well-being by supporting individuals who wish to quit smoking. The Health Center, as part of the Wellness Program, organizes awareness campaigns and smoking cessation initiatives, providing counseling services and informational resources to employees, students, and the broader UM6P community.
5.7. Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in disciplinary measures in accordance with UM6P’s internal regulations.
5.8. All visitors to UM6P are subject to the same non-smoking rules. Hosts are responsible for informing their guests of these guidelines, and a mandatory awareness briefing on the applicable measures must be provided prior to or upon their arrival.
5.9. UM6P’s HSE staff, including safety officers and agents, are fully authorized to intervene and remind individuals of these guidelines in case of non-compliance. This responsibility is an integral part of their mission to ensure a safe, healthy, and smoke-free campus environment.
SECTION 6 RESPONSIBILITIES
6.1. The Direction of General Affairs ensures the effective implementation and enforcement of the Smoke-Free Policy across UM6P’s campus by overseeing compliance, maintaining designated smoking areas, and ensuring proper signage and waste disposal infrastructure.
6.2. The Health Center is responsible for implementing awareness campaigns, smoking cessation initiatives, and counseling services as part of the UM6P Wellness Program, to support individuals who wish to quit smoking and to promote overall well-being within the UM6P community.
